Description: 'Color World' is beautiful little hybrid which is thought to be a cross between the popular cultivar Aeonium 'Velour' and one of the former *Greenovia species, either Aeonium dodrantale or Aeonium aureum.

*(Greenovia spp. - commonly known as Mountain Rose, are now classed as Aeonium).

*** We formally sold this particular Aeonium as 'Color World' Form 2 *** Please see notes in the comments section below.

The slightly soft downy foliage and the deep colours of maroon and purple are remarkably characteristic of Aeonium 'Velour', whilst the form and rosette shape is akin to both Aeonium dodrantale and Aeonium aureum.

The colour changes throughout the year are very typical to that of 'Velour', showing soft tones of green, copper and bronze over the cooler months, then transitioning to deep shades of purple and maroon throughout summer and when in dormancy.

Over the summer dormancy period the rosettes tend to close up substantially and become reminiscent to that of the Aeonium Mountain Rose.

Overall, it is a very beautiful creation and we think you will love it!

Plant Care: The plants are generally only small growing reaching around 20cm x 20cm. Plants are tough and easy to care for and look fantastic when grown in a small bonsai pot or as a decorative feature. Grow in good light to bring out the deep purple colours.

Origins: As far as we understand, it is a development from China which is believed to be a hybrid between Aeonium 'Velour' and either Aeonium dodrantale or Aeonium aureum.

Comments: We have two forms of this hybrid and both are very similar, yet distinctly different. We initially sold the two forms as 'Color World' form 1 and form 2, but after much deliberation we have separated the naming of the two forms following international trends. THIS PARTICULAR FORM is the most true to type and retains the name 'Color World'.

From the extensive research we have done, it appears that 'Color World' was an accidental cross created by a grower who specialises in developing Greenovia hybrids.

It is our understanding that the creators grow the majority of their of plants from seed, so it is our speculation that 'Color World' was initially grown on mass from seed and the resulting often slightly "variable seedlings" were then sold and initially redistributed all under the one name 'Color World'.

Normally in the process of developing a new hybrid or cultivar, one superior specimen is selected from within a batch of seedlings, which is then cloned via cuttings or tissue culture, resulting in uniformed identical plants to then be marketed. In this case we don't believe this has happened.

A brief history on the naming of 'Color World' with permission from Gosia - Suksy (Succulent City)

The name is inspired by the Trailokya - the concept of three worlds. Depending on the religion there are a number of interpretations. In Buddhism, the three worlds refer to the destinations for karmic rebirth. One of them, Rūpaloka (the world of form). The breeder considered that "they just want to be quietly born in the garden, and be a "color" to be provocative" so that is why they name it "Color World".

This one is no doubt going to cause a heap of confusion, particularly as we have seen a lot of look-alike now being sold under a range of different names.
