(Aeonium canariense x Aeonium simsii)
Description: Aeonium x velutinum is a hybrid between Aeonium canariense x Aeonium simsii.
The main rosette is large growing easily reaching 30cm across, producing a small number of side shoots. The rosettes are rather flattish in habit and are densely covered in fine pubescent hairs which gives the plants a soft velvety feel.
The foliage is generally a dark green to a greyish green in colour. We have not experimented growing this one in full sun, but we feel is may show some lovely colours typical of both parent species.
Plant Care: Plants are strong growing and will form a large plants very quickly if given the room to grow. This is another variety which would be very happy grown vertically if a suitable position could be found.
Origins: The type species is based on a plant originating in cultivation at the Botanical Garden Jardin des Plantes in France and is not known from wild populations.
Comments: This is an interesting hybrid which shows distinct characteristics of both parent species. The large rosette size and the soft velvety foliage is very typical of Aeonium canariense whilst the leaf shape, marginal cilia and the idioblasts on the undersides of the leaves are distinct traits inherited from Aeonium simsii.
